Cold Water Escapades

? 8/22/2005 - Fins

So, after evaluating my pocketbook, I'm not going to be able to purchase all my equipment at once.  Thats ok, I guess.  I still am committed to getting a drysuit, but realize that I'm going to have to save a bit before I can do that.  So I thought I'd start buying some of the cheaper stuff as I'm able.  I took care of the mask.  But now I'm looking for fins.  Its kinda crazy.  You can spend $130+ for these things, but you have no idea how they'll perform.  In my last dive on tuesday, I used these atomic split fins.  They were fine.  I didn't spend the entire dive thinking, "crap, these fins roxor my boxors."  Hell, they could have let me rent a rubber slab and strapped it to my feet and I'da still been happy.  So how is one to know what to get?  Its hilarious, you go to these fin manufacturer's sites and they have all these videos of people swimming around in their fins.  They have captions like "sustainable top speeds," and "decreased air consumption."   Its entirely possible that they do those things, but how can you tell by watching some dude swim around.  I watched them and said, "yep, they can swim with those fins."  Maybe thats all I should care about.

I've heard/red that the split fin design isn't liked much for wreck/cave divers because they aren't so great for the frog style kick.  I forsee myself diving in very silty waters, so its probable that I'll be using that type of kick.  I think I'd like to get a basic blade fin that doesn't suck.  If anyone has any recomendations, I'd be grateful.

? 8/22/2005 - Fins for wreck/tech diving

Most of us use Scubapro Jetfins. They are the most durable fins made and will allow for backwards kicks. I like mine for the fact that they are just heavy enough that I don't get "floaty feet" in my drysuit, but not so heavy that I get tired of having my legs bent all dive. They usually sell for around $80-90 in California, substantially more in the midwest. Unless you are really loyal to your LDS I recommend looking at Ebay. There are always 50-100 pairs for sale, most at cheap prices. A thirty year old Jetfin will work just as well as a brand new one. Do a search for Jetfin, Jetfins, Jet Fin and Jet fins. Sellers can't seem to agree how to list them.

different diving conditions. I have five pairs of fins, each for different "porpoises." I use my Apollo Bio-Fins most of the time when I'm diving the leeward (protected) side of Catalina. If I'm diving in an area with potential current, I dive my old Aqualung (US Divers) Blades for a bit more power. When I travel, I use one of my older (and generally lighter) pairs of fins to decrease weight and so if they get lost or stolen, I don't really care.

Max - thanks for the tip. I certainly have been seeing lots of them on eBay. I just didn't know if it was because they suck, or everyone has them!

Bill - so if I end up getting several pair over the next couple years, it doesn't mean I'm insane? :D Thanks for the help

I use ScubaPro's twin jets and I like them(besides nothing else fits with my rock boots)... Like Bill, I have other pairs also.. I definitely prefer my V-Tek splits when I'm diving a wetsuit...

No..not insane for having many fins. You'll want different ones for diving in the Lakes on wrecks, vs. the ocean open water. Personally, I love my Apollo biofins but...they are very flexible and alot of men don't like them for that reason. They don't feel like they get the propulsion they need. I can dive with them for days and never even feel them. I have Oceanic Vortex splits for my drysuit, and they are a bit stiffer and I like them alot for cold water. A good friend of mine won't dive any other fins but the Atomics that you tried out.

I also have the scuba pro twin jets and they give me "foot arch" cramps after about 3 days of diving. So I tend to keep them only as a backup. But alot of people really love them. So it's all different.
