1/31/2007 - Mermaid Movies

Hopefully, you will be able to read between the lines of my reviews and get an idea if you will like the movie or not.

Ineo Gongju
A Korean movie from 2004 whose English titles are The Little Mermaid and My Mother the Mermaid. Foreign mermaid movies are kind of strange. This film is a fantasy but the fantasy is not where you think it might be. Really, there are no mermaids as such. (This is the case in a surprising number of mermaid movies I haven't included here.) The title mermaid is really a pearl diver. I have read somewhere that women who dive in other to derive income or sustenance from the sea are one possible origin of the mermaid legends. This may or may not be true.... The point is that such women are called mermaids and are usually the strong, self-reliant type. Getting back to the movie, the fantasy comes in when a young woman visits the island where her parents met and somehow passes through a timewarp. She ends up meeting, and befriending, her mother as a young woman. This is a revelation for her because the mother she knew was an angry, unyielding monster.... The woman she meets on the island is hopeful and full of aspirations. This is a movie about the changes that life forces on us. How events shape our characters - not always for the better. In a way it is like the dark side of "Back to the Future". It is not your typical escapist fantasy but a movie of deep feeling and compassion.

Sea People

John (Hume Cronyn) and his wife Bridget (Joan Gregson) are mer-people, or Sea People, living on land in a village in Nova Scotia. Amanda (Tegan Moss), a lonely teen-ager, one day "saves" John whom she sees jump off a bridge into very cold water. John shows her that he can swim just fine and doesn't mind the cold. Amanda, however, is freezing and he takes her to his home to warm up. There Amanda begins to suspect that John and Bridget are not your average human beings. They eat algae, drink seaweed tea and sleep in large tanks of icy water.

This is a charming little family film in the Disney mold but very well done. Most of the credit goes to the cast, writer and director. Like most good mermaid movies it has few special effects. Primarily aimed at teen-agers and children adults will enjoy it too.

SPLASH

I am a sucker for romantic comedies and was not disappointed with this one. It was an early vehicle for Tom Hanks, Daryl Hannah (the mermaid), John Candy and Ron Howard (the director), and they all do their jobs well. Only bad point is that the mermaid is so passive. Take a look at the folk tales on this site and you will see that mermaids are movers and shakers. I suspect that the writers didn't do much research into mermaids before writing the script. It would have been nice, too, if they had added a touch of the mystical to her character. There are a couple of hints of the mystical but they are never developed or emphasized. All in all, though, it is one of the most enjoyable mermaid movies around.

9/30/2006 - Naked Scuba Diving

For many people the feeling of diving in nature with nothing on is ver relaxing and for that reason, you will actually find a number of naked scuba diving clubs consisting of people who enjoy being free while in the water. Diving in the nude is very exhilarating, allowing the water to caress the body naturally. The number of people who enjoy naked scuba diving would probably surprise you.

In addition to the great feeling that you get while diving nude, there are also the safety considerations. For instance, some subtropical and tropical waters have problems with sea lice that become caught under clothing. The problem is that sea lice sting and it hurts. However, sea lice do not cling to exposed skin, which means people can scuba dive naked and not have to worry about these annoying creatures. Keep in mind that it is recommended body hair be trimmed or shaved.

Additionally, naked scuba diving also helps the diver to become better aware of the underwater environment, which actually teaches better diving skills. For instance, underwater, there are rocks, cliffs, coral, and other items that when brushed up against with a wetsuit can do damage to expensive gear or even create a safety hazard. By feeling the environment on the body, you become more aware of your diving and the environment, which means being more careful.

Just as there are many benefits of naked scuba diving, there are some risks too. In this case, male divers should avoid the process of feeding fish. The reason is that some fish cannot tell food from a male's appendage, thus causing a bite. In addition, men should protect themselves when in large schools of fish. While this might sound funny, it can be a problem and bites do occur. Therefore, just be aware of the environment when diving without a wetsuit or bathing suit so you take the right protective measures.

Interestingly, many divers are now trying naked diving and finding they love it. The following are some sites that accept nude diving should you decide to try it for yourself:

St. Martin - Orient Beach French

Mexico
§ Cozumel - San Francisco Beach
§ Yucatan, Mayan Corridor - Playa Del Carman
§ St. Barts

§ West End Bay

§ Cat Island (Cutlass Bay)

9/27/2006 - More Amazing Mermaids Stories

Mermaids exist in the twilight place between land and sea, in the psychological intertidal zone between life-giver and life-taker. Wanton, seductive and alluring, these amphibious goddesses of classical myth toy unabashedly with a man’s affections, offering him sweetness yet bringing only death. The paintings of the pre-Raphaelites portray mermaids as lovely maidens with a silvery aquatic tail, who comb their luxurious tresses in serene repose along a placid shore, but the mermaids of old were neither so innocent nor demure. With the sultry curve of their breasts and the dulcet darkness of their dreamy eyes, those half-forgotten ocean deities promised to reveal the secrets of the unattainable fathoms, only to drown men with their savage affection.

We are fascinated by mermaids because they represent the unknown, the mystical, and the dangerous predator behind a graceful face. Mermaids have captured our interest in the same way in which they snared the hearts of sailors, dizzying us and disorienting us, pulling us under the turquoise waves. Many of the oldest stories claim that the merfolk have no tongues, yet this doesn’t keep them from casting their spell over the poor unfortunate who falls in love with them; one tale tells of a fisherman’s daughter who becomes infatuated with a merman but, when she discovers that he can never proclaim his love for her, she follows him into the ocean, only to perish.

Some claim that mermaids still sing their wordless melodies, playing amongst the waters and the waves. Juan Cabana, wandering the lonely shores of secluded beaches, has often found the mortal remains of these creatures. In life, they swim below the surface and rarely rise from the crushing deep, but upon death, the merciless storms cast their bodies up from the dark waters to deposit them on the white sand. Juan knows the distant coves where the currents bring them, and he gathers their remains with the hope of preserving them, honoring them, and showing humanity that we are not the only intelligent species on this beautiful planet. These teratisms of terrible beauty, wild and exotic, lie beyond the taint of human civilisation. They live in harmony with their aquatic environment, and Juan's respect for them has resulted in a never-ending search for mermaids and sea monsters around the world.

Cabana’s mermaids are no gentle pre-Raphaelite maidens. These mermaids seduce us, not with their siren beauty, but with parchment skin and haunted eyes. Their allure lies in their hypnotic honesty. Cabana's mermaids have been dredged from the stygian depths, where the pressure and endless darkness breed spine-toothed monsters and grotesque simian scavengers. These creatures are the sisters and brothers of Barnum's Mermaid, some crawling from the banks of a lagoon, others laid out like wizened specimens in a laboratory. They seethe with life, they call to us with shrill tongues and crooked fingers, they beg to drag us down into the abyss. From the mid-ocean trenches and the bottomless channels they come.

9/15/2006 - Underwater Sex?

mmm strange topic:

SCUBA sex - sex underwater - sex while breathing from SCUBA SCUBA sex
- sex underwater
- sex while breathing from SCUBA

a recent question is "SCUBA sex"
as a long time professional SCUBA diving instructor ...
i have done many things in life - almost all that is possible - but sex underwater always was a tabu for simple safety reasons !! kissing underwater - YES - if your buddy is underwater like a mermaid - but sex you better do where you belong - above water !

SCUBA sex is technically possible - it simply is a safety risk - if you turn on your lover girl - she may forget where she is ... and may drown !

cool
sex without being turned on - everything under control ... simply for collecting another sex environment is no fun at all - it's all about ture divine love ! true love needs a safe environment where you may near-faint while loving and still be able to enjoy loving sex in full

sex on the beach or sex in the water is fun - sex underwater is better the domain of whales or dolphins and mermaids !!!

2/8/2006 - More about Sirens and Mermaids

"In 1739… The Scots Magazine carried a report that the crew of the ship Halifax, short on rations in the East Indies, had caught and eaten several mermaids. Upon arriving in London, the sailors described how, when taken, the creatures moaned 'with great sensibility.' The flesh, the men said, tasted like veal."

"Sirens especially were viewed as symbols of lesbianism, their sexuality both alluring and threatening, and like lesbian relationships (at least as the conventional wisdom of the time went), sirens viewed men as either prey to be consumed or inconsequential playthings to be destroyed. That, and their apparent inability to consumate sexual relations with a man made mermaids dangerously perverse in the Victorian mindset."
