?9/19/2005 - A different kind of dive

Posted in Other

Anyone else done a chamber dive before? Quite interesting and funny to see how everyone reacts. Of course I thought I was fine, until I saw the video afterwards! Max depth was 75m.

?9/4/2005 - Inland diving

Posted in Other

Pretty relaxed weekend, just did a couple of dives at an inland site here called Miracle Waters.

Couple of "sites". A bus, plane and a couple of training grids mostly. Did see a few fish and one big ass crab, but mostly it was just an opportunity to get wet and to test some new gear. Bought a couple new torches and a new compass.

Must say the ScubaPro Bluelight is one awesome torch!

?8/10/2005 - Amazing experience

Posted in Other

So I was phoned by an instructor who works with the physically disabled and asked if I would assist in some pool sessions. I have never taught anyone with a disability and let him know this. He said it would be fine as he would just like me to be there as an extra safety.

So I headed off to the pool, there were 3 divers with varying disabilities, what really inspired me was this one young girl. She is 16 and had both legs amputated after a car accident. Seeing her enthusiasm was really great.

There were 4 instructors there volunteering their time, I was the only one without experience with disabled divers.

After helping the students kit up we got in the pool, we just relaxed at the bottom (1.5m) for a few minutes to assess everyones comfort levels. After that we went through a few skills and basically swam around the pool for a while. When we surfaced the joy these divers expressed was really amazing. So much excitement after a simple pool dive, and such commitment to getting the skills perfect. Some of my regular students could really benefit from having them around.

All in all a great night, I learnt alot and now I would like to persue this form of instruction further.

?8/4/2005 - Off to the Shoal

Posted in Other

Yay this weekend I am off to Aliwal Shoal for 3 days of relaxation and great diving. Been a hectic few weeks and after the recovery dives I really need to get back in to the fun side of diving.

The raggies are still there so there should be some good shark action, hope to get a dive on the Produce wreck as well.

?7/31/2005 - Another one of those days

Sadly its another recovery. Searching for the body of a teenager who fell into the Vaal dam. The 16-year-old boy fell off a ski boat after bumping his head.

?7/24/2005 - One of those days

Posted in Other

So yeah one of those days, I am a volunter diver with the police force here and I got a call out yesterday morning, worst possible call to, body recovery. Seems a car lost control and went into a dam in the Draakensburg mountains, recovery went as good as a recovery can go and we located all 3 victims.

Remember people, speed + alcohol + large body of water dont mix
