4/8/2006 - Fijian Fish #6 - Octopus vitiensis, 1885

Bighead Octopus.
Good Gogglers with a keen eye will often spot these little octopi flubbering around the reef (that is a scientific description of their behaviour) and know that their Latin name comes from the Fijian word for Fiji - Viti. Primarily maroon in colour these will rapidly pulsate a silvery colour when threatened or excited, as the one in this picture is. I might add that I did not take this picture, although I wish I had. This guy did. Good job sir, there are only a few pictures of these around and this one is great.
