22/5/2007 - FijiFAQ#5 - Will the jellyfish sting me?

Posted in FijiFAQ
You will see jellyfish all year round in Fiji waters but during the first quarter of the year they multiply, or bloom, and dense aggregations can be spotted in the water, with many individuals washing up dead on beaches. These aggregations often occur close to land and Gogglers will often encounter them at the reef edge, where they are attacked mercilessly by the fish, particularly wrasse and sergeant majors. The two most commonly observed species are the Common or Moon Jelly (Aurelia aurita, 1758) and the Crown Jelly (Cephea cephea, 1966), neither of which will give any noticeable sting.

Mmmmmm... jelly!
The Moon Jelly is a concave disc about the size of a hand with fine hairs coming from the edge and four opaque blue/purple rings in the centre.

Moon Jellies
The Crown Jelly is larger and looks like a purple broccoli!

Wow this is a really old post, I am absolutely terrified of jelly fish, can't even look at pictures of them. When I think about them I get the shivers. It isn't fun because I never go into the sea because I'm afraid of even seeing one. The swimming pool is my friend.
