5/8/2006 - FijiFAQ#1 - What's the weather like?

Posted in FijiFAQ

It's tropical. Weather patterns are dominated by the Southeasterly trade winds that blow steadily from June to November bringing Fiji's winter, with drier, cooler weather and rougher seas. The summer "rainy season" officially lasts from December to April and is characterised by higher temperatures and humidty, with more variable wind patterns and generally much calmer seas.

With all of this said, during the "rainy season" you may encounter long spells of clear sunny weather, and during the "dry season" there is no guarantee that it will be dry. When it does rain it is most commonly at night and usually very heavy. When it does rain during the day clear skies usually follow.

So, in summarry...

May-November: Cooler, drier and windier with rougher seas

December-April: Hot and humid with calmer seas, unless there's a cyclone.

Historically there have been fifteen cyclones per decade on average, with two to four actually causing severe damage. They occur from December to April and with greatest frequency in January and February.
