20/7/2006 - Fijian Fish #4 - Meiacanthus ovalauensis, 1877
Yellow/Canary/Fiji Vampire/Forktail/Fang Blenny.
With more nicknames than Sean Puffy/Puff Daddy/P.Diddy Combes there a couple of things Good Gogglers know about endemic blenny: 1) Its Latin name comes from the island of Ovalau that is home to Levuka, Fiji's capital city in Colonial times; and 2) Most fish stay away as it has venomous fangs.

It mimics a type of cleaner fish that is also yellow. When fish approach to be cleaned it takes a chunk out of them.
I'll just get me parker.

| I watched a programme about sharks earlier this evening. It appears that Great White Sharks are on the move and may even have reached British waters. Are they also moving towards Fiji? Will young Jake yet get his wish? On the other hand the programme also said that all sharks are vastly reduced in number even compared with 20 years ago, so you may still be safe. |

Much too warm for them here. There are lots of tiger sharks and bull sharks though. Sharks are very much on the endangered list, as a result of finning for soup in Asia and overfishing generally...

Well, that's a relief! I can think of people I wouldn't mind being eaten by sharks, but you are not on the list.
I believe that I have seen a basking shark, and we have a photo of the boys on the beach at Spurn Point with what looks like a shark fin sticking out of the water in the background. Nobody noticed it in real life, but it is before everyone started messing about with photos in the computer - not to mention the fact that Truprint or Bonusprint or Boots or whoever developed that batch of pictures in the days before I went digital wouldn't have - so the fin of whatever it was is definitely genuine, and it was in the Humber in the mid-1990s.
Yesterday, I freely admit that I would happily have thrown Joe and Josh to any passing Great White as they never stopped needling each other. What were they doing in my house anyway? At 15 and 20 they hardly need me to babysit them!!! I was signed up for puppy sitting, and keeping an informal eye on their little sister. |

I beleive the biggest annual aggregation of basking sharks in the UK is around the Isle of Man, although I don't really know a great deal about them. There's a good kids book called Oscar the Basking Shark though. I got Georgia Sammy the Seal for her birthday and will get Jake the Oscar one if I remember!

| Grandma says this is a nice picture! In fact she says "I could do that - nobody's done fish..." so don't be surprised if you see it on the dining room wall next time you're in Cleethorpes! |

| There's a bloke in Grimsby who paints Koi Carp all the time. Personally I'd prefer a bit of variety. |

Georgia (& Jake) loved Sammy.
We are off to Kefalonia on 20/08 so will not be at home for Jake\'s birthday.
Email me your address so we can send you a post card.
I remember going to Cornwall when I was about fifteen and going out sea fishing. We had my friend Yvonne with us and she sat on the side of the boat with her bum hanging over (It was quite ample) when Dad pointed out the basking sharks. I don't think I ever saw her move so fast. |
