25/4/2006 - Orange Coral & Cucumber Sex

Posted in Pictures

I wanted to go and take some pictures of "the orange soft coral off the beach and some sea cucumbers"...

Here's two pictures of Cris and the koral (one I clearly played with a bit more than the other - you decide which you like):

Just after we'd finished taking this and about 46 others we went looking for sea cucumbers and found about 7 of them all up on end in a fairly small area spraying sperm into the water column. I had heard that they did this but had never seen it before:

If anyone reads this and knows the proper name for this type of sea cucumber it'd be very helpful, I'm buggered if I can find it.

I like the pic on the left as it shows better the coral and its orange colour.
Sea cucumber is Class Holothuroidea, but of course you know that already.
I've browsed some pics online and I think you've found a Pearsonthuria Graeffei which grows up to 20 inches long - the Graffiti Sea Cucumber.
I'll email you the pics.

are my two favorite things to film underwater... or topside. Of course I'm referring to the sea cucumbers.

We're back to weird sluggy looking things again, I see. We watched King Kong the other night - it showed just how dangerous they can be, when someone was digested by a gang of slugs, euch!

Dad - I should have said "I'll be buggered if I can be bothered to find it"! Ta. I've got loads of pictures of them actually - I like them. It was the first time I'd seen them doing this though. I've seen squid and octopus doing it but not these. Two random facts: 1) They leave a turds that look like a sand-bead necklace. 2) They're anal breathers.
