11/4/2006 - I'm Winning

Posted in shells

:: No fishing is allowed off any beaches adjacent to guest bures - about 30% of the island.

:: Where fishing is permitted, catch is only for consumption on the island - none to be taken home.

:: Fishing boats from elsewhere attempting to fish are to be evicted by security.

:: Removal of clams from the sea is not permitted.

:: The 'decorative' clam shells have been removed from beside the path - look how many there were!

I'm not flavour of the month amongst some of the staff but I couldn't care less. They all get fed well enough that they shouldn't need to catch supplemental fish, they all earn enough that they can buy fish from the fishermen at the wharf where they land when going on their days off anyway and besides which most of them are hopeless fishermen and catch little but trample on all the coral in the process. Those that are decent fishermen go fishing elsewhere in their days off and understand that Vomo is something of a nursery for smaller fish and that protection of a small area benefits fish stocks in the wider region.

I'm quite pleased, I only hope it can be enforced and that it lasts.

11/4/2006 - Winning against whom?

Sorry I don't quite understand. You are a dive instructor on the island, but are you also a manager of sorts of the resort? If you aren't, well they are going to be up in arms - but I wish you luck in trying to protect and preserve the island.

11/4/2006 - good for you

It's always hard to convince people who think it's their God-given right to fish when they want, where they want. Now I used to love fishing, still love eating them and even worked in tackle shop for a while, but these days I'd rather see them alive and kicking under water than drag them in on the end of a line.

12/4/2006 - "House Reefs"

Posted by
I am subcontracted to manage the diving and watersports at http://www.vomo.com.fj/ - I look at it like this:
The head of housekeeping makes sure the rooms look nice.
The head of landscaping makes sure the grounds look nice.
I make sure the reef looks nice - that's one of the reasons that people come to Fiji after all.

It's a private island - none of the staff are 'from here'. They come for a 4-5 five day shift and then they go home. The island used to have a taboo on fishing - placed upon it by the president of Fiji (who is the traditional landowner). However, that taboo has lapsed and the local fishermen are starting to rape and pillage indiscriminantly. (Some of) The island staff now think it's "unfair" and that they should also be allowed. Actually nobody's allowed, the taboo just hasn't been put back in place. In the meantime the reef is suffering.

I also had issue with the fact that giant clams weren't classified as fish and consequently 2 or 3 a day would be eaten for snacks and the shells used to decorate the pathway. I also have reservations about the turtles - see my previous post.

The GM is a nice guy and I like him - he's just a bit of a pushover sometimes and although he would like the hotel to be eco-friendly (or eco-aware at least) he isn't always privvy to the things that I see and I am just making sure that some of what should and can be done is done.

Good for you, Rick. Keep up the good work. And just keep explaining - never lose patience with those who don't understand (at least not to their faces) - and you'll win in the end.

Why do all communists drink herbal tea?

Because all proper tea is theft.

Boom-boom!

Your mum doesn't always appreciate these jokes, but you usually do.

That's my boy! Keep it up. We used to have similar trouble in Egypt, stopping people touching the ancient carvings. They all thought their little scrape didn't hurt...
PS. Dad's birthday 21st April - you may also wish to greet the Queen, who is 80 the same day...

For what it's worth, my Uncle Frans will be 83 the day before - a date shared with the late and unlamented adolf Hitler!

So, did you remember your Dad's birthday. I did, but the e-card I sent, despite coming from the Birthday Card list, had the greeting Get Well Soon. (Just so long as they don't know anything I don't.)
