Diving in Laguna Beach

*5/20/2006 - Interesting dive...

So I went diving in La Jolla for the first time ever. I'd say it was a more enjoyable entry/exit/dive than Laguna. I was lucky to be able to tag along with Missy and one of her friends at La Jolla shores. We got into the water around one in the afternoon. I had a short fill, a very short fill, 2300psi to be precise. I was very unhappy about this, and I'm going to get the valve checked tomarrow, and make sure I'm not leaking or the like.

We went down to a max depth of 63ft, and spent most time at about ~55ft. I was in amazment of all the creatures around me, as well as a new diving enviornment. Towards the end of the dive I spotted what looked like a giant black sea bass, about as long and huge as one of my legs. It got very cold, even in a 7mil wetsuit with a neopreme vest/hood underneath. As it got colder, it became difficult to control my breathing, but after a few minutes it was back to normal. I had a 22 minute bottom time, untill my tank got to ~750psi and became far too boyant.

When I say far too boyant, I mean that my tank was pulling me to the surface and there wasn't too much I could do about it. I slowed myself down as much as I could, but I basically went from 30ft to the surface in just under 1 minute, which is faster than I'd care to ascend. I also had nothing to grab onto, so making the 3 minute saftey stop was a no go. I was just happy that I didn't get bent :).

Tomarrow looks like bad conditions in Laguna, perfect chance to go to Laguna Sea Sports, and talk to Gordon, perhaps it's time to get reweighed again, and/or better yet buy a steel tank.

I'd like to say thanks again to Missy for letting me come along. She's a good diver, and dare I say cute as well. ;) All kidding aside I enjoyed myself and appreciated the chance to dive in La Jolla for my first time.

I will deffinitly be back...

*5/15/2006 - Sunday Morning Woes at Shaw's

Last Sunday(that would be yesterday), I got to Shaw's some time around 7:30. Conditions looked pretty bad, but I saw three rather large groups going out, so I thought I'd wait for their report. Met a guy who was looking for a buddy at Gordon's Shop. After talking and looking at the conditions we figured we might as well go out and see if it was that bad.

Despite the large amount of foam in the water, the surf was pretty calm. I would have considered it a really easy entry. By the time we kicked out towards the end of the reef, my bc had sea grass all over it. Right as we were prepairing to dive, I noticed a group of 5 dolphins heading right towards, and even though they must have been no more than 7 feet away, visability was so bad that nothing could be seen. I was sort of bummed about not being able to see them, but it was a nice visit still.

As we started the asscent I could see my buddy, but then suddenly he was gone, and all I could see around me was more or less lots of green floating particles. I was a creepy feeling, when I looked up I couldn't even see the surface clearly. At about 28 feet my buddy and I found each other, and I decided we should head back to the surface. I think he was a little perturbed that I didn't want to continue, but if I lost him on the way down, chances are we'd get sepperated durring the dive at least once.

I was happy that the surf was still calm when we came in, which made for a clean and easy exit.
