18/3/2006 - The Spider Caves
So the plan was to spend saturday and sunday looking for the Spider Caves and the Bubble Cave at Broughton Island.Saturday
- we head out on the boat, and from the directions we were given from
the local dive shop, and the aerial view map we had from the local
coast guards, it looked like we were in the correct spot for the Spider
Caves. Once we get under the water all would be revealed. So
we go down the anchor line, and find we're in 12metres. The Tom Byron
book says that the Spider Caves were in fact in 12metres. So we started
looking. After about 10 minutes of looking around we start to think we
wouldn't find it. We turn around and start heading back when we pass a
school of Bullseye ,
we take a closer look ( the local dive shop told us you'll know if you
have found the caves as there is bullseyes protecting the entrance ).
We found them. As
you can see from my pitiful drawing below, the cave had three
exit/entry points. Four dead ends ( one with a massive Cuttlefish with
the words ' leave me alone ' in colourful language written all over its
face ) ,
and down one of the swim throughs there was the biggest Port Jackson
shark i have ever seen ( actually it could've been a Crested Horn
Shark, but it was too dark to get a good enough look at it ). Once we went through the cave for the first time, i was the last one out of it, my two buddies were blah blah
blah blah blah blah like mothers in a pta meeting. It was so funny, i
couldn't make out anything they were saying but they could understand
each other. So we went back through a couple more times till we were getting low on air.49minutes
17metres later we were back on the boat. We decided to skip the second
dive, as we didn't think any dive for the rest of the day could top
this one.
