August 3, 2007 - Earthquake Vanuatu
EARTHQUAKE HITS SANTO
A powerful magnitude 7.3 earthquake rattled the Pacific nation of Vanuatu on Thursday, cracking roads and disrupting power supplies, but did not cause major damage, local authorities said.
The quake occurred at 0409 locally on Thursday about 45 km southeast of the central island of Santo at a depth of around 150 km below the Pacific Ocean surface.
"It's a pretty good size, but it's deep and there is no tsunami threat. It's aways out to sea," Geophysicist Robert Cessaro at the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center told Reuters.
Jesse Benjamin, a spokesman for the Vanuatu government meteorological office, said the quake was felt strongly on Santo.
"There are cracks in the roads, cracks in the offices, the power went down and computers, but we do not expect major damage," he said from the capital Port Vila.
I have phoned my friends in Santo and they say that everything is okey dokey. Although all those beautiful blue bottles in Alans house are now in pieces.
Not sure about the Coolidge, they called all dives off today as the water is still very silty although they seem to be quite excited to get back in her to see if anything has been uncovered and they discover new items!

November 6, 2006 - Its my party and Ill Dive if I want to
Well thats what I thought when me and 15 dive buddies boarded Ocean
Trek last weekend! The Friday drive down to Jervis Bay was a sleepy
blur in the passenger seat. Husky pub was even more of a blur and even
getting on board was misty. The next day whilst everyone geared up and
plunged in to the waters of Jervis Bay, I lay sick on my death bed,
wishing i was dead. I sleept.... YES ASLEEP ALL DAY OF MY BIRTHDAY...
My friends got out and told me about the days dives then got in again
for another, and another and another.... until it was time for the
party.. I Managed a few hours dressed in my Toga to make an appearance
for my party..... The best part of my diving birthday party was the
CAKE!!!! OMG Perfect....Back to bed while the party continued without
me,, and it was pretty much the same for Sunday. Whilst having a head
that felt like it was going to explode, and a nose like a tap and a
throat like a chainsaw had just visited... I had a great time... and i
would like to thank the 15 friends who joined me on Ocean Trek for the
best birthday ever. Dives or no Dives.

June 22, 2006 - Swansea walk of shame
Well
we dived the bridge last night and what a dive, had no idea what the
hell was going on. Started the dive like any other but finished on the
northern bank, then we had a choice try and swim back and end in NZ or
do the walk of shame. You guessed it the walk of shame prevailed, I
never realised how nice the view is at night when walking the bridge.
Anyhow, only 8 more sleeps till we fly out for the
Phillipines.( I hear beer is only $1.40 aus) thats a shame!
until next time

June 6, 2006 - Not Diving
Well its been a few weeks now since i have been in the water.. The Prolapsed disk in my back is stopping me from getting in, although it might have more to do with the cold.. Anyway only 2 weeks until we set off to the Philippines and i cant wait.. Everyone has gone out today to dive at Terrigal and i am left here to once again think about how good it would be to be diving...I have had a hard week with X's popping back into my life and not being really welcome, and all i really need is to be under the water were no one can talk to me or hassell me.

June 6, 2006 - Feelings
I have had mixed feelings over recent events in my life. I know I have made decisions off my own bat that have brought some of these feelings on but also some cicumstances which I am not in control have made an impact too. It has been and iteresting time over the last couple days to say the least, but the good news is that I have come to realize that I am human and have the mixed emotions that everyone else has when things go in a different direction to what you are used to. I am pleased to say though that are much contemplation I am the happiest I have ever been and with our departure to the phillipines just around the corner (15 days approx) I will enjoy the break. I enjoy going abroad as no one can contact me from hell/work to ask me stupid questions, like "do I realy have to work for 8hrs a day", "have you seen my hammer" or "can you wipe my arse". Yes it is like working in a day care centre and when I get back from holiday I am going to see about a career in child care because at least kids listen. Anyway enough of the poor me and back to more important issues. The henderson suit, I dived on the weekend agian at swansea bridge but this time wore a bibbed hood and have to say it was sensational, no coldness. I seen the biggest Mangrove Jack to date on sunday he was at least 45 to 50cm. More pineapple fish plus the host of usual gunthers, dusky and threadfin butterfly fish with a mix others to varied to mention. The up side on all of this was my companions on this dive, Thanks Guys
This weekend is kids time, those lovely little cheribs (no I havent been drinking) yes they will be over to spend time with dad and eat me/us out of house and home. But it is all worth it.
Until nest time, Chow

June 6, 2006 - FISH FARTS
FISH FARTS
A question that we have all asked ourselves hundreds of times is: How do fish communicate? Come on I know you have!!!! Well I have......mmm ok then, moving on.
I'm pleased to report that we may, at last, be getting closer to an answer, thanks to an important recent discovery by fish scientists. This discovery involves a bodily function that some readers may find distasteful to read about (even though I bet they do it) so before I tell you what it is, here is a Warning.
WARNING TO PEOPLE WHO ARE OFFENDED BY THE WORD FART'' -- The following paragraphs contain the Word "FART.'' So if you don't want to see the word ''fart,'' go read a classier part of the newsletter, such as the calendar.
OK, now that we've gotten rid of FART HATERS, let's get to the amazing recent discovery that has fish scientists in such an uproar, which can be summarized in 2 words words:
Fish fart.
'Biologists have linked a mysterious, underwater (naughty word that rhymes with 'smart') sound to bubbles coming out of a fish anus. No fish before had been known to emit sound from its anus nor to be capable of producing such a high-pitched noise.''
If you go on the NewScientist site you can actually hear a recording of a fish making this mysterious noise. Isn't modern technology amazing? A hundred years ago, if you had told people that some day there would be a giant network of incredibly sophisticated ''thinking machines'' that would allow virtually anybody, virtually anywhere on Earth, to hear a fish cut the cheese, they would have beaten you to death with your snorkel. And they would have been right to do so... infact that’s a different story so once again lets move on.
Anyway, the fish on the Internet makes a high-pitched raspberry noise, which turns into a series of rapid ticks. The herring research team has named this sound (I am still not making any of this up) a Fast Repetitive Tick, or FRT.
The critical question now facing the scientific community is: WHY do fish fart? Scientists quoted in the article speculate that the fish might be using these sounds -- which they make mainly at night -- to communicate with each other.
This raises another question: What, exactly, would fish need to communicate? I mean, we're talking about creatures with roughly the same IQ as a Tic-Tac. They are not down there discussing Boyles Law. My guess is they're probably breaking wind to convey extremely simple messages such as: ''Hey, it's dark!'' ''I know! The same thing happened last night!'' ''Who said that?'' ''Me!'' ''Who are you?'' '' A fish!'' ''Wow, that's amazing! I'm also a fish!'' ''Wow! I'm also a Knigts Fan!'' ''Wow, that's amazing! I'm a Knights Fan. . .'' etc.
I contacted the Marine Science Department of the University of Newcastle. I spoke to a thoughtful man with a British accent, and he sounded quite serious about the research. Have you ever been in one of those situations where you think the topic is pretty funny, but the other person does not seem to be nearly as amused as you? That was what it was like for me, talking to Dr. Wilson about why Fish break wind.
I asked him if, by any chance, the wind-breaking herring happened to be males. Because if they were, that might explain it: It is a well-known scientific fact that human males deliberately break wind purely for the sense of accomplishment it gives them.
But Dr. Wilson said he was unaware of any correlation between the sex of the fish and the FRT noise. He also noted that it's difficult to tell male and female fish apart in some species. Maybe that's what they're communicating about: ''Hey, you want to mate?'' ''Sure! My name is Bob!'' ''Hey, my name is Bob, too!'' ''UH-oh!'' etc.
But whatever the fish are up to, I am confident that, in time, Dr. Wilson and his colleagues will get to the bottom (Har!) of it. On behalf of humanity, I thank them.

June 6, 2006 - NOW IM A CARNEY
Well the outdoor adventure expo is finally over and i have to say it was a good event when the weather cleared.. Drizzel and 40 knot winds ripped through on Friday and Saturday but God answered my prayers and we got sunshine for a while on Sunday. The temp inside the dive tank was a balmy 16 degees and the exhibit was a hit with the punters. It looks like we may be doing a fair bit of discover scuba courses over the next few months and also some open water courses! excellent.

May 29, 2006 - The Weekend at Swansea
The weekend dives at Swansea were both unreal. Vis wasnt great but i got to try my new fins and boots. Got to say the boots are UNREAL... so so so so warm. Henderson Hyperstretch Titanium!!! Excellent. The fins were also good. But i still think the Oceanic Fins are way more comfortable in the water and less pressure. But still a great performing fin.
So anyway the brige dives were once again great dives, lots and lots of brim, surgeons and also lots of tropical types. I will have photos soon so keep an eye out.
So thanks Henderson for letting me try out the new boots they are tops and i will be purchasing a pair!

May 28, 2006 - New Gear/Great Dives
I
tryed a Henderson hyperstretch titanium 5mm suit yesterday at Swansea
bridge along with an Atomic Mask and would just like to say what great
gear this is. Lets start with the suit, I have to say I was a bit
sceptical at first, a 5mm in cool water your kidding. Well it preformed
very well and I may go as far to say excellent, I dive in a 7mm
predator pro semidry all year round with the addition of a hood in the
cooler months. I must say though in the summer I do struggle with the
warmth but this new addition to the stable will certainly take pride of
place over the old girl. I dived agian at the bridge today with the
seatec and have to say the henderson preformed just as well yesterday.
Now the mask, just to let you know I have a couple of favourite masks,
splendive4 and a oceanic shadow. Both of these I cannot fault they are
great masks, but unfortunatley I think they are doomed to kick around
in the bottom of my dive tub forever or go to the hire department for
some lucky punter to use. I have to say with out a doubt the atomic is
just awsome the silicone is outstanding, even with two day growth water
leaking in was at a minimum. The range of vision from the mask is
also outstanding.
All in all the functionality of the new gear was outstanding 10/10 but
the main things are, the suit makes me look slimmer and shit I look
good in that mask.
Elroy
P.S. will post photos later
P.S.S. I have to thank that lovely lady and friend of mine Bib for the
two dives and the oportunity to enter the dive arena again and Greg for
letting me bum, sorry I mean hang around the shop and last but not
least Barry the legend for being in the shop on saturday and making
great coffee (kidding)

Im getting my stuff organised to do a night dive tonight at Cabbage Tree Bay, but knowing me i will pike at the last moment cause im too cold. My back is really hammered at the moment so i may not go ahead. I will let you know. Now about the phone bill!! its now a whopping $800, which is a joke so i will have to pay that soon to avoid any other charges... I think i will have to stop talking so much. Yours in diving Belinda
