Wreckreational Diving

1/22/2006 - Too Much Fun!

Today's conditions at the Caissons could not have been much better. There was just enough current to make the anemones open and sweep clean water through the site. We had vis of better than fifty feet. Considering this site is not far from Los Angeles Harbor, that is amazing. Hilary and I swam around the structure, all the while enjoying the splash of color everywhere. Corynactis californica anemones covered every inch of the structure not covered by scallops and metridiums. Baitfish surrounded the top of the structure while a large Copper rockfish cruised slowly below us. A large male Cabezon guarded his eggs next to the anchor. Looking down the vertical walls from the top and seeing the color all the way to the sand forty feet below was such a wonderful thing to share with Hilary on her first dive here. I used my HID light, but we could see the colors without it. I love blue water diving in SoCal. I'm not sure but I think Hilary enjoyed the dive as well. Despite being cold from a leaking drysuit she seems to have a permanant smile now.

Check out the links below and you will understand why I love diving here, and sharing it with others. Not only was the dive great, but now I feel better knowing that Hilary has seen something that most SoCal divers will never see. And if Ross is reading this, don't be concerned. Hilary is an awesome dive buddy. Every time I glanced over to check on her, she looked like a kid in a candy store. The only thing I love more than diving a site like this is sharing it with someone who truly enjoys it.
