6/27/2006 - Fabien Cousteau's Fake Great White

Posted in Marine Science

you know, i understand that it's in the name of science (or at least tv ratings), but this idea of building a replica of a great white shark with which to study sharks in the wild is a bit ... well ... weird.

but here it is:  a replica of a great white shark built by Fabien Cousteau to shoot film for his CBS special Sharks: Mind of a Demon (not that that's an inflamatory title or anything):

fabien cousteau (inside the fake shark) is lowered from deck

Fabien gets into the shark geared up as for a regular scuba dive (using a rebreather).  the shark is then flooded, and he drives it along.  i can't figure out from the story if the shark is electrically powered.  anyway, here's a picture of Fabien inside the shark, before they close it up:

maybe Fabien will next build a replica of a scientist so he can investigate first hand what goes on in that milleu.

Don't see why you can't accept this as a potentially legitimate way to investigate shark behaviour up close and personal without the intrusion of a human form. I can't say whether it works or not.... I would assume the other GWS'es can detect it isn't real based "behavior" or electrical impulses from the "shark."

To dismiss it as mere showmanship seems unfair when it might produce some legitimate observations. I speak as a scientist of course.

Wouldn't mind something like that in the dive pool...

Imagine the students faces :)

i don't know ... pick the most "feared" predator in the sea, say he has the
"mind of a demon," then swim among them in a shark costume...

just seemed a bit too high-shool for me, that's all... hope they learn something useful

Man that just ticks me off. RRRrrr. Guess all you can hope for is that the name of the show draws in some viewers, then they spend 60 minutes educating the viewers that being a predator doesn't make an animal a "demon." Why is it that hippos kill dozens of people a year and no one makes a documentary called "Hippos...Mind of a demon..." No one wants to dress in a hippo suit and dive around in murky hippo waters, I guess.

that using a title like that (undoubtedly chosen by the TV gurus that wouldn't know a shark if it knocked on their door and bit them when they answered it) is a bit suspect. Will watch the documentary to see if it is truly meaningful. A graduate school associate, Dr. Rocky Strong, has also spent time inside the mechanical shark if I'm not mistaken. But then Rocky is crazy... he stood atop gray whales and filmed as they were attacked repeatedly by GWS.

H2Andy... it sure was a questionable documentary.

funny that hippos should be mentioned since Fabien's grandfather did a documentary about hippos in a similar fashion.

The title was not pitched by Fabien.

The editing was most unfortunate since they had several hundred hourse of shark footage and not much of it ended up in the final cut.

The biggest problem with it I think is that CBS has the money, but they don't make documentaries. It isn't surprising that it doesn't concentrate on the real research and discovery.

As someone who has met Fabien I think I can say that he truely cares about the science. He is not the kind of person who is after money or fame. He is quiet modest and talented enough to easily make a lot more money in other jobs if he wanted to.
