5/18/2006 - She Hath Sunk Upright!

Posted in Scuba News

after nearly a full day of suspense ... it appears the buzz was

right:  the Orisknay sank as expected and settled into the bottom

sand upright.

a report from an on-site diver has the top of the structure at

69 feet and the flight deck at 130 feet.

there may be a tilt to the deck, which may explain a conflicting

report of the deck being at 150 feet.

all in all, it looks like the Mighty O behaved quite well.

yesterday, May 17, 2006: explosives go off to start the sinking only 30 minutes behind schedule

here's the link to the Pensacola Diver's Forum, where the report of

the Orisknay's position and depth were first made.

I have also heard, based on reports from side-scan sonar and divers, the flight deck is resting in 150 ft of water but the tower is at 60 ft. What happened to the calculations? I thought the flight deck was supposed to be at 130 ft. However, I did just read that at least a portion of the flight deck may be at that depth.

My guess is that the increased depth will (or should) greatly limit the number of recreational divers who will be interested in diving this wreck. If true, projected revenues from increased tourism to the area may not meet expectations. If false, I'd expect more divers to be heading for the nearest chamber.

Disclaimer: I'm not a big fan of wrecks, especially new ones (without growth) that are below rec limits.

5/18/2006 - deck appears to be at 130 feet as intended

Posted by H2Andy
bill, it seems 12 divers from the same outfit went down to the deck, and they
all agree to within 2-3 feet that the deck is at 130 feet.

the 150 feet figure is attributed to the Navy; i doubt they got it wrong. probably
a reporting thing (something got lost in translation with the reporter)

5/19/2006 - how far out

Posted by voodooconstant
I had read somewhere that they sunk it quite a ways out. I think the number I heard was 20 miles. Any truth to that?

5/19/2006 - yup... about 24 nm out

Posted by H2Andy
yeah... they sunk it in 212 feet of water, about 24 nm from Pensacola
(but rougthly 20 nm from the nearest land)

the idea was to suit the needs of both fishermen and divers, and to provide
a variety of diving opportunities: 70 feet to the island, 130 feet to the
deck; 150 feet to the hangar deck; and on down to 212 feet inside the
carrier for penetration dives.

5/20/2006 - Tower

I would love to just dive around the outside of the Tower at a depth of 65 to 80 feet there would be a lot to see from up there to keep me happy.

5/20/2006 - 130 vs 150

H2Andy- seems like there has been a fair amount of misinformation on the actual depth. I think I'd have to agree with you that the 12 divers probably got it right... unles they were all narc'ed! Just teasing.
