5/17/2006 - She Hath Sunk

Posted in Scuba News

the Navy exploded the charges on the Oriskany at 11:20 a.m.

Eastern time. the great ship took approximately 40 minutes to

sink, and was completely under by 12:00 p.m.

observers say that the Oriskany sank bow up, and with a little

bit of a list.

the Navy will report shortly as to how she settled on the bottom.

2:00 PM Update:

Eyewitnesses say that the ship appeard to sink on a "bow high"

attitude, and listing to starboard. However, they say that the

ship appeared to "right herself" once the flight deck became

completely submerged. Still no word from the Navy as to

how the ship has settled on the bottom.

Not to state the obvious, but the sinking did not go according to

plan. The Oriskany was supposed to sink slowly in about 5 hours.

Instead, she went down quickly in less than 40 minutes.

4:00 PM Update:

No word yet as to how the Oriskany is resting on the bottom,

but some great video has been made available of her final

moments.

5/18/2006 - A Lot to Learn

Posted by DrBill
Based on some of the recent sinkings of ships to serve as artificial reefs, I think we still have a lot to learn about the proper way to do it. As a scientist, I question their value as "reefs," but realize many divers are fascinated by diving them. I did the Spiegel Grove (pre-righting) and wasn't impressed although I did enjoy diving on the Duane. There's talk about doing the same thing here off Catalina.

If you're in a not good position and have no cash to move out from that point, you would have to take the loans. Because that would aid you definitely. I get term loan every single year and feel fine just because of this.
