3/4/2006 - Oriskany Sinking: Take 2

Posted in Scuba News

well, the U.S.S. Oriskany has a new date to sink to the

bottom of the Gulf of Mexico, near Pensacola:  May 17, 2006.

Source.

you may not want to hold your breath, though.  last year,

the Oriskany was also supposed to be sunk off Pensacola,

but delays kept the Mighty O from her date with the Gulf.

instead, she had to be towed back to Texas to ride out

hurricane season.

a team from National Geograhpic will be on hand

to record the sinking ... should it take place  ...

the oriskany last year in pensacola... awaiting her fate

3/5/2006 - Sinkings

The wait is always worth it. We had a sinking locally here in the Med and boy-o-boy did they get it wrong. The weather conditions were not perfect with high onshore winds. The Reggio, an ex-ferry, thus drifted as she sank coastwards. Instead of lying in clear waters at 25 mtrs she ended up lying against the cliff walls at 35 mtrs and instead of gaining coral growth she simply silted up.
Hardly anyone dives her now. As soon as the lead diver moves over her there is such a cloud silt that nobody else sees a thing. Even the fish stay away.
Thus, the moral of the tale; have patience, it`ll be worth it in the end. I look forward to diving her.
