Malta divingI've made it back in one piece! The islands were fantastic, but I was a little disappointed by the actual diving. The water was warm (26 degrees C average), but the fish life wasn't that fantastic. The plant life was a little better, but still no great shakes. Saying that, I saw a few morays (one quite large!), some huge octos and a couple of small lobsters. We did get to do two 38m wreck dives and a night dive which were great! The wrecks were in great condition because they have only been down there since 23 August 2006. I would love to go back in a year's time to see how they've held out against the elements. The night dive was good too. The viz was OK and the water was still warm (22 degrees C) and we saw all sorts of sea-life including octopus, conger eels and a small lobster. Photos will be posted as soon as they come back from the lab! Fully serviced and ready to try out next week in Malta. Mind you, it set me back £50 to get the thing cleaned up! It'd better bloody well work! I'm sooooo excited! I haven't dived since last March! We dived in Rooi-els, about 1 hours drive from Gordon's Bay, a small town just outside Cape Town. Obviously I was overwhelmed by everything that I saw. Up until now, I'd been an avid snorkeller and spearfisherman, but I was in awe of what lay before me! The amazing colours that were brought out by the light of our torches, the many colours of the fish and the various soft corals and, more importantly, the size of the crayfish at depth!! My buddy, Mark, was a qualified divemaster and somehow we managed to 'lose' the rest of the group. We swam through a tunnel and even up a chimney. Not bad for a first time! I will post some catch-up posts about previous dives as my next dive holiday is only in September - Malta! I'm hoping to do some wreck dives while I'm there. We're staying on the north tip of the island close to Comino and I'm hoping for some great boat dives off the Comino coast. In November I'm off to Australia for 3 weeks. Maybe I can get a few dives in then too, but I'll be staying with family in Melbourne, so I'm not sure about that. Also, in January 07 I'm going to visit my folks in South Africa and I DEFINITELY want to do some diving then! But for now... it's miserable ole' London! ![]() Chat soon, Del 01:16 - Friday, May 19, 2006 - comments {4} - post comment |
