As promised, here are some photo's of the crayfish (Rock Lobster) that was caught on the 30th April 2006. Unfortunately I can't take credit for catching this one, that honor goes to my brother. He was already about 3 or 4 crays up on me for the season going into this dive. He definately has bragging rights now, at least until a catch a bigger cray than this one or catch at least a dozen more crays than he does by the end of the season. The cray is ontop of my 12.2L (100cft) Faber dive tank. It weighed in at am impressive 3.3kg and had a whopping 160mm carapace. To put that in perspective, most crays caught around Perth have a carapace of around 80mm and probably weigh around 500g.

The cray was caught at the a site called 23m Ledge just north of Mindarie. For what has been a very average summer, the conditions this day were perfect. No wind, no swell, great viz. The only down side to the dive was that only 3 crays were spotted. I came up empty handed.

Some people have asked me how the cray tasted!!! Well, we never found out. After taking a few photos and showing off the prize catch, we decided to let the cray live another day. After a few beers and back slaps, I paddled out on my surf ski to a nice little reef just north of Ocean Reef Marina and released her. Releasing sized crayfish isn't a normal practice of mine, especially during a season that has yielded very few crays, but this cray was just too big to put on the dinner plate. We actually didn't have a pot big enough to cook it in!!!
