Diving with The BigFella

November 16, 2005 - I'm back

Well team it's been a while again.
Things have been very hectic lately.
I have been teaching an OW course a week , along with training some DM's as well, as well as our shop having a massive sale, organising the F69 to be sunk, and got married. All since I last blogged here.
This weekend was a blast as the Former HMNZS Wellington, designation F69, was finally sunk 800 metres from my back door step, 6 years after the idea was first flirted with. I got to dive her 4 hours after she had touched down and again last night. Even tho she is only sitting in 26 metres of water it is still a fun dive and should become a beautiful sanctury for aquatic life.
Here are the photo's.

G'day Azza,
great to see those photos of the F69. I was gutted I didn't get to to tour her before she went down - in May she was still being salvaged and wasn't ready for tours, then in October they had only finished tours the weekend before. Would've been great to see her above and then below, that's for sure!!
Anyway, good to hear you been keeping busy and congratulations to you and Lil Darlin'!
Cheers,
ris

It is a shame you didnt get to tour her but on the positive side it will be cool to explore her underwater. It really is a great wreck and due to her shallow site she can be dived by pretty much anyone who can handle a little current.
I seen your email at work the other day and I presume Dave got back to you or your partner about a DAN O2 course?

Yeah cheers, Ben ended up doing the course with Vic uni as they were holding one at the right time for him. It was held somewhere down at Island Bay, and he was amazed - he didn't know there was such a good spot to dive there!!! Will have to check it out sometime!

Glad he got it done. Unfortunately we don't hold that many Dan O2 courses anymore as the EFR course incorporates O2 provision in it.
The South Coast has some awesome diving spots, especially just outside our shop, due to hundreds of thousands of years of big southerly wells carving out caverns and canyons among the reef.
On my days off I don't even bother taking a boat out as the shore diving is so plentiful and has so much to offer-although I probably need a long body Gavin to explore it as much as I would like. I generally take my twinset and do anywhere between one to two and half hours bottom time on my dives there as there is so much to see.

Next time you are both in town then please feel free to flick me an email and I will take you guys to some of my favourite spots :)
